Johanna Lieselotte “Lilo” McCool, 96—a resident of Chicopee for many years and, for the last two years, of The Reserve in East Longmeadow—passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield. Lilo was born on November 11, 1920 in Leipzig, Germany. She was the daughter of the late Hermann and Emma (Perlt) Goltzner. Lilo was predeceased by her husband, Hugh J. McCool, a son, Michael McCool, and her two brothers, Heinz and Herbert Goltzner. She is survived by her children, Gisela Hupe and her husband, Dr. Dieter Hupe, of Germany; Dr. Joan McCool and her husband, Dr. Michael Rutter, of NY; Ernest McCool and his wife, Lorri, of Wilbraham; and Dr. Heidi O’Connor and her husband, Chris, of Longmeadow; stepchildren, Hugh McCool and his wife, Pat, of CO; and Mary Deschenes of Holyoke. Lovingly called “Oma” by her nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, she also had four step-grandchildren and and six step-great-grandchildren. A beloved matriarch with many interests and talents, Lilo was an avid bridge and bingo player, a lover of nature and music, and a sports enthusiast who had an eye for fashion and everything artistic. Lilo was exceptionally creative and was a hands-on builder, a savvy renovator, and a smart business woman. She will be remembered as a loving, family-oriented, elegant, fun, energetic, optimistic, hardy, and generous person with a delightful German accent who made a lasting impression on everyone she met. A private funeral was held on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Medical Center, 271 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
