John J. Stevens, 89, of Springfield, MA, died peacefully on November 12, 2017 at Mount Saint Vincent Medical Center. John was born on August 12, 1928 in Springfield, MA to James and Marianne (McKenna) Stevens. He was a lifelong resident of Hungry Hill in Springfield, MA.  He graduated from Technical High School, then pursued degrees in criminal justice at Springfield Technical Community College and Western New England College. John served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1952. After the service he worked at United American Bosch, and the Springfield Bus Company before joining the Springfield Police Department in 1954.  He worked as a police officer on the Springfield Police Department for over 30 years.

John was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Church and most recently the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr in Chicopee, MA. He volunteered for many years as the Bingo coordinator at Our Lady of Hope church, and as coach for youth baseball at Van Horn Park. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and the Springfield Association of Retired Police. After retiring he enjoyed caring for his three grandchildren.

John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Stephanie (Krzelest) Stevens, his children;  Dr. Kathleen Stevens, Michael Stevens, Theresa Tittle (James) and John Stevens (Betsy) and grandchildren; Allison, Patrick and Jillian Stevens. John was preceded in death by his parents, James and Marianne Stevens, brother, James P. Stevens, and sisters, Nora Kotlarski (Peter Kotlarski) and Mary T. Martin (John “Jack” Martin).

Visiting hours for John will be held at the Cierpial Memorial Funeral Home, 69 East Street, Chicopee MA, on Wednesday, November 15, 2017, from 3-7pm. John’s funeral will be on Thursday, November 16, 2017 from the Cierpial Memorial Funeral Home at 9am with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, 566 Front Street, Chicopee at 10am. His burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Chicopee. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Ministry of Care or the Sisters of St. Joseph Springfield Retirement Fund.
